The Immersion Retreat | Portugal
April 25 - May 2, 2020
Welcome to the Immersion
Join Michelle and Kelsi on The Immersion Retreat, A Journey for the Modern Woman. Listening to our intuition can feel foreign to many of us, a part of us that may even feel lost. This journey to the Atlantic Coast of Portugal - near the charming fishing village of Zambujeira do Mar, in the Alentejo region, which is known for its long stretches of untouched coastline and charming white-washed villages - is a time of reclaiming, of purpose, and of learning how to deeply care for the self. Through ceremony and ritual we will explore asana, breath, self care, creation and heartfelt self exploration. An experience for those desiring to gather with insightful women in reflection, inquiry and studentship. An experience that is deeper than a retreat and lighter than a training. Our genuine desire is to have you leave with the tools to create your own ideal sadhana that invites you to feel integrated and whole.
Cocoon Portugal is a 275 acre coastal farm + retreat, offering inspiration + community for the modern traveller. It's also pure magic, where between the oversized hammocks and the freshwater lake, you'll start to lose track of time. The kind of place where each morning is a celebration, practicing under the canopy of old growth pines, but so is each evening, with world class meals and fascinating dinner conversation.
Situated on the breathtaking Atlantic coast of Portugal, near the charming fishing village of Zambujeira do Mar, in the Alentejo region, the area is known for its long stretches of untouched coastline and charming white-washed villages. The ocean, with bluffs, trails, and sandy coves, is a 10-15 minutes drive, or a lovely bike ride.
From Lisbon, Cocoon is about a two hour drive south, “entirely dependent on how many espressos you’ve had” they say. (from Faro, they are slightly closer).
At Cocoon they believe that a nourishing meal and a delicious feast don't need to be exclusive of one another. Their food is local, with most of their produce coming from either their property, or a nearby farm. Oh yea, and they have a wood-fired pizza oven...
From a sustainability standpoint, they choose not to serve red meat, pork or poultry. They do serve eggs from their chickens, locals cheeses, and occasionally wild-caught Atlantic fish.
A typical breakfast includes eggs, local fruit, Greek yogurt, homemade granola, local honey, homemade jam, slow-rise bread, and a daily tonic.
Lunch is often a bowl; a base of ancient grains like farro, topped with avocado, roasted veggies, nori, or mixed greens.
For dinner, expect Indian + Japanese curries, Mediterranean stews, legumes, rice, salad and dessert. We also have an outdoor, wood-fired Pizza oven.
Dietary restrictions such as gluten free and vegan are easy to accommodate.

Nature & Adventure
Hop of one of Cocoon’s bicycles to explore the area. Help them collect eggs from their crazy chickens. Skinny dip in their pristine freshwater lake, or simply daydream in their oversized hammocks...
Cocoon is just a 10 minute drive from the beach. Praia de Malhao is one of their favorites - a fabulous untouched beach, perfect for surfing, swimming, or sunbathing.
There's also world-class hiking, on the famed Costa Vicentina trail, which will be perfect for our Spring gathering!
The Yoga Shalas
Depending on the weather we can choose between their indoor shala or their outdoor pine shala.
The indoor shala is light filled and has enough windows and doors for the air to circulate freely. The floor is hand-made traditional Portuguese Santa Catarina tiles, which are both beautiful and a joy to practice on.
The outdoor shala has wood floors, and is shaded by a handful of old-growth pines. The outdoor shala has no walls, and is a 3 minute walk from the house. Which can be especially wonderful for morning practice, as the fog rolls in.
Traveling to Cocoon
Cocoon is a few minutes from the charming fishing villages of Zambujiera del Mar and Vila Nova de Milfontes, both in the gorgeous Alentejo region of Portugal.
If you're traveling from abroad, you'll probably come from Lisbon. They’re about two hours drive south from Lisbon. Faro, which is in the Algarve region, is slightly closer. (Faro is where many low-cost European airlines fly).
If you’re traveling form the US please ensure that your passport does not expire within 6-months of departure date or you will not be allowed into Portugal.
Check-in on May 25th at 14:00 (2pm) and opening circle will be around 17:00 (5pm) please make sure to book flights to arrive accordingly.
Coming from Lisbon, Cocoon recommends a stop in Comporta for a swim, a delicious, stylish lunch at Comporta Cafe — needs a reservation and we hear it’s well worth it!
Another option for an arrival lunch is at A Choupana, where no reservations are needed and it’s about a 15 min drive from Cocoon.
These five core values embody Cocoon’s culture, spirit and dedication to doing what’s right. They keep Cocoon aligned and help them make decisions about everything from the food they serve to the way they make business decisions.
Arriving early or staying later? Please prepare accordingly. You can reach out to Cocoon to see what they’re availably and costs are outside of the retreat time or explore the area via nearby Hotels and AirBnBs.
This retreat is open to students with some proficiency in yoga, but classes will be all-levels.
Participation in all classes and gatherings is highly encouraged, but we also encourage you to listen to your body and what it needs each day.
